background: jade leech was born a moray eel in the northern sea, where it's cold and likely too dangerous for his own good. he and his twin brother floyd were taught self-defense even at an early age, and more often than not had only each other to rely on. one special day, they came across azul ashengrotto, an octopus-type merman who'd constantly suffer from bullying due to his different form. while other mermen made fun of him and judged him for his weak constitution, jade and floyd found themselves both fascinated and interested by him. — and so, their exquisite and unique friendship began.

they have been together for years; since junior school, to middle, to 'high school'— or college, night raven college, a prestigious academy that houses only those most proficient in magic. bearing different dormitories, the twins and azul were sorted into octavinelle, founded on the pity of the sea witch. azul soon became the prefect of the dormitory, as well as the manager of 'mostro lounge' — a business venture that is part-time a relaxing establishment for students to gather together and enjoy their menu, and part-time the one place they are supposed to go if they have a wish they would want granted.

all they have to do is make a deal with azul. easy, see? he's not asking for much at all —

other than the one thing they hold most precious, the one thing they're proud of. many a time it is their unique magic, and by signing the contract, azul truly does get their wish granted to the best of his ability (with the help of the twins, of course)... but simply being kindhearted doesn't bring about much fun, does it? the conditions tend to be extremely hard to fulfill, and by not paying the price, the students end up becoming azul's slaves; such is the plot of chapter 3, focused on the octavinelle dorm. the protagonist, who lacks in magic, strikes a deal with azul — he must release all the students he has, ah, 'scammed'. the payment is their worn-out dormitory, and the condition is to retrieve a single picture from the atlantica memorial museum. easy and simple... if it weren't for jade and floyd, who do their best at hindering any and all attempts to retrieve the picture useless.

plot comes and plot goes, and when azul ends up cornered and breakdowns in despair, thus going 'overblot', they rush to his side in sheer concern, helping the protagonist's party defeat him. while they are constantly on azul's side for his schemes, thinking nothing but how enjoyable and entertaining it is, the way their 'leader' freaks out and panics over turning back into who he used to be isn't at all fun for them, thus helping him find reason again. he panics over the party seeing the picture they retrieved with more attention, as his past self is in there — after all, it is a photograph of their elementary school trip. the picture is the last remaining memory from his past that is visible to the eye, and he wanted to get rid of it at all costs. but memories are things that should not be erased, jade tells him. they are precious little things, no matter how much one may be ashamed of their past.

personality: the vice head of octavinelle, twin brother to floyd leech, and azul ashengrotto's assistant and right-hand man. his name is infamous throughout night raven academy, inspiring both fear and admiration.

at first sight, jade leech is nothing but a respectful, polite man who carries on his shoulders the burden, worries, and selfishness of others. it is exactly what trey clover thought of him after observing a few of his interactions. "as i thought, jade is being manipulated. he's having a hard time, and if this keeps up, he won't be able to stand the mental exhaustion", is what was thought of him, only to be quickly rebuked and told what an insane thought that is by riddle rosehearts. "i'm in the same class as jade, and honestly i don't think i'd want to get close to him as much as i'd rather not get close to floyd" — they are, after all, two peas in a pot; or two eels from the same batch of eggs.

however, before we delve further into what makes jade a terrifying existence to be around, we should not dismiss the surface. it is true that he is eloquent and generally the more polite between him and his brother; unlike floyd's more casual speech, jade is known to speak in keigo, the polite speech in japanese language. if one were to assign him a trope, he would even fall under the 'butler' one; his body language, speech and general attitude mirror perfectly what one would think of him. he is thoughtful, considerate, quick-witted and is even good at serving tea, not being past hearing and asking for advice on how to improve his tea-brewing techniques from one kalim al-asim: "so a part of the hospitality service in the country of hot sands is tea. i am very interested in that. if it’s alright with you, would you be willing to teach me some brewing methods?"

that behavior of his, however, is what makes him instigate fears in others. in simple terms, while his twin brother is the 'muscle', jade is the 'brains'. when it comes to the many jobs and tasks they are given by their leader, floyd's methods are unpredictable and often physical, while jade prefers to rely on reasoning, logic, and a good dosage of verbal manipulation. his smarts are to be feared, as he is able to remember every tidbit he finds out about a person — their age, home-country, likes, dislikes, hobbies, favorite and least favorite food, and so on. he will even find your social media accounts, and the ones you keep locked and in secrecy. any and all information that they could use against you, is what the three main faces of mostro lounge look for.

in other words, jade's cunning is what truly keeps him from being 'manipulated', as once thought of him. he is as guilty as azul and floyd, often plotting schemes with the former once you turn your eye away from a single second. after all, he still goes after whatever is most entertaining for him, and their leader (and equally childhood friend) is the one who knows how to provide the pair lots of that. there's very little else he is truly interested on; after all, since the very beginning, he leeched (haha) together with azul simply because he found him fascinating. his attachment to all that impresses and amuses him is not limited to his octopus friend either — even floyd might likely have been chosen by jade, as he states "it seems like i really made the right choice when i chose you to be my partner when we were still small fry. you're really a special one.", to which floyd responds "i'm also glad that you're the one i chose to live my life with".

that being said, just because he is azul's underling it does not mean he listens to him twenty four seven. he is loyal to him, cares and trusts him above all else (floyd being the sole exception), but as mentioned beforehand, jade seeks entertainment first and foremost. it does not mean he will turn around and backstab azul at the next opportunity, but when confronted about matters supposed to be kept a secret — "i believe that there was a secret agreement between us not to talk about [my past] again!" —, he simply dismisses it with a "oh my, excuse me", not entirely caring whether or not he has broken their 'secret agreement'. it doesn't disrupt the end-result of azul's plans, but the means used must be as enjoyable for jade in order for him to truly bring about azul's wit to life.

while not under an equally similar serious case, the matter of jade's hobbies is one that severely goes against what his twin and boss can appreciate. as they are born mermen, it is of no surprise that the twins find admiration in things that require leg movement (floyd, for example, being much into dancing). for jade, he has a personal hobby in hiking, going as far as to found the 'mountain loving' club. as an extension, he is almost exquisitely obsessed with mushrooms, and can easily become fixated on them to the point that it sickens those around him (floyd and azul). a good example is during his labcoat episode, where floyd complains that all of jade's 'late-night snacks' have been mushrooms — "all your late-night snacks have been mushrooms recently. i'm sick of it." / "to be sick of them... i suppose it's been about ten days? that's not enough to show just how much the mountains have to offer." / "nope, i'm done. i'm sick of mushrooms!" —, and when azul complains that mostro lounge has had mushrooms dishes for two weeks — "it has been two weeks straight of your mushroom menu. two. weeks. straight! i won't eat anymore. before that we have to think about customers getting tired of coming to mostro lounge." / "but thinking about throwing away the mushrooms i put my all into growing makes me so..." —; it shows that while jade is an upright, educated individual, he has his own quirks that he holds close to his heart as well. ... well, as long as "someone enjoys eating my mushrooms, i will be happy", is what he says.

the too long, didn't read is that jade leech is more than the eye meets. he lies through his grinning face as though it's second nature, many a time his words being sharp daggers disguised as plastic knives. he's not afraid of speaking his mind, as he is eloquent enough to measure his words in a way that wouldn't get him into immediate trouble. talking to him is just a game of wits, and coming from a man so quick-witted, it's very unlikely you'll be the winner. and yet, he's only one of the three dangers of octavinelle.

powers & abilities:

01. かじりとる歯 ( shock the heart ) whoever jade comes in contact with as he uses his unique magic, they'll be forced to speak the truth against their will. whatever is on their mind, they'll confess to it as jade asks them a question. there are a few limitations to this ability, however: he can only use it once per person, and it does not work against those pure of heart or with a strong will, or those who have braced themselves mentally before its usage.
02. elemental magic they're very simple fire/wind/water/neutral magic. think avatar aang but a lot less powerful.
03. shape-shifting medicine as mentioned before, jade's real species is a merman. he takes a specific, powerful shape-shifting medicine in order to turn his body adequate for the surface.
